how reliable is clearing to secure you a place?

I'm a student from the EU so I've already got my results and the horrible knowledge that I'm in clearing cos I didnt meet my offer (neither firm nor insurance) Crying

we havent got clearing here in germany, you get your results in june and start applying then and your either in or not (and I'm not saying that this system is better cos its not)

so now I'm wondering what clearing's like. do I stand a chance of getting a place or is it very hard? how many people end up with no place? of course I know a few universities which would be great to go to but I would also accept a different university at the other end of the country,as long as I get a place and my course suits me.

I want to do a business- related subject (and I was offered to do computer or chemistry as an alternative. lets put it that way: I was so desperate that I actually thought of accepting it, although I'm already having a hard time with facebook.. No  I declined cos I wouldnt be able to pass the stupid subject)

I know that the results in england havent been relased yet,but maybe someone can still give me some advice and maybe (but I hope not,for your sake) some other people will find themselves in the same situation and can give me some advice..

thanks a lot anyway!

bayan, they get updated at 6am on thursday.

nat, i got a magazine from ucas yesterday. 38,000 people went thru clearing last year! lol, i think ur certain to get a place somewhere, but dont just go for anything, believe me, i know some people hu just wanted to get away and went thru clearing to some ... rather rubbish, shal we say, places, and now theyre in a mess. on ucas website, u can find all the necessary grades for each subject at each uni. check which ones u did well enough for, and ring them up, theyre almost certain to have places, because as u unfortunately know, not everyone who applies there, meets the conditions! im actually thinking about doing the same, but in reverse lol. only offer i got was not one i like, and i reckon im better than that. so if my grades are better, gona ask a better uni if i can go there, cancel my ucas application and do it again with that uni if that makes sense. thing is, now im worried i wont even pass for the "rubbish" offer!!

so yeah, give it a shot, sorry for you not getting in tho Sad

www.thestudentroom.com there's tons of people on there that might be able to help, but its pretty much as people suggest, you can or should be able to get a place on a course somewhere..but be picky!

thanks! Ive already looked at those vacant places in scotland,I could get a place, its just that its hard to figure out what my german grades equal to those in britain.so I might just call them up for a course i fancy and if they dont want to hand it out,I'll ask them if they can offer me a different course.

if I wont get a place it wont be cos of lack of determination.hehe, I can even sleep a bit longer than the others before starting to call the universities. thew time here is +1hour so its 11pm now where i live.i can have a cup of tea before calling. but after my disaster at my other university,I kind of got the feeling that they might not want a student whos ambitious but who has got top grades..

it seems easier to get good grades in the uk (although I know that u need to invest a certain amount of work). they change the whole school system at the mo.last year, the exams were dead easy,so this year they tried to give you a hard time.in the end the stupid politicians had to admit that it was kind of mean to create a maths exam with tasks that no one could solve (after 2 months of not studying, people were offered to resit it.in 2 days.still, about 2000 people took it)

hmm,I'm starting to rant off-topic.. it just annoys me that I'm worried cos the government is useless... magic word: elections! Super Angry

I'll checkout that link!

and if anyone has already had experience with clearing: spill!!

btw, whats a foundation year? Confused does that mean they send you back to school for a year? cos I think I'd look silly in a school uniform (I'm 20)

No, I think a foundation year is still at the uni, it's just another year on top of the entire course duration, which I think pulls you up to speed with the others entering first year?

Yeah, a foundation year basically means that you are not prepared for the actual degree yet (due to your grades) so it's like a pre-degree year that prepares you for the real thing. Fear not, this will be at uni rather than a school. Good luck and keep trying !

One more thing I forgot to mention -

Business-related degrees are VERY POPULAR in the UK. Therefore not many good universities will have spaces in clearing on that course as so many people have applied anyway. What I would suggest is some good unis do a course which combines business studies or management with a different subject such as a language, chemistry, maths, law or really weird subjects such a art or something. My advice is consider these - for example Queen Mary's does management and German in one course (I am actually thinking about that if I don't meet the requirements for my courses).

I don't know whether you had a look at The Times Good University League Tables 2009 (google this)  and pick Business Studies and see what uni's are good and what you can get with your grades. I know I might sound pathetic of big headed but there is absolutely no point coming from Germany to study something you want to do but at a really useless place. At the end of the day what you want to do with a degree is to get a good, rewarding career hopefully and having just a degree doesn't help nowadays.

yeah,I had business with law as my firm.I saw that there was a uni with management+pr+business and the grades looked as if i could actually meet them. pr and managment sound interesting,so i would also take them alone. i know that business is popular.. damn. and I hate languages (had 4 at school).sure, my german is just as good as my english but doing german at uni means german lessons (nooo,i had already suffered 10 years english lessons, and I AM english) and that you are sent to germany for a year (i'm trying to escape from this country)

still,if i had no other choice,I'd do it. at least I'd know that there'd be one thing i wouldnt have to study for, although I'm paying a fortune for it.. I feel asleep during my english classes (my teacher wasnt amused),I ended up with a C+ . I did those translations of my certificates myself cos my teachers told me that I would do a better job on them than they could ever do (lazy bastards).they just told me to hand them in and get those translations certified by the school.

On the good side you have your results sitting right in front of you and know exactly what you can do with them in clearing! All you have to do is actually wait for clearing to open :-) We have to wait and then panic and make impulse choices - at least you are save from that. Good luck with your options

i think i need to wait for my clearing passport to come by post first and i was told that it takes about 2 weeks, even though it has been sent.weird.. and thats not cos I'm in germany, its normal to take that long (thats what they said) i'm on holiday so i'll ask them again why it should take so long :)
