Take advantage of the summer

The long summer that comes with student life is a great chance to improve your CV and increase the pounds in your pocket. With up to three or even four months of time on your hands you need to weight up your options.

Could you:

-    Find a placement related to your course?
-    Find a job abroad?
-    Do volunteer work?

It’s more than possible to any of these. If you are not so worried about money and want to really increase the value of your CV then look into volunteer week for a couple of weeks over summer. Check your college or university job shop for many volunteer listings.

If you are thinking of doing something abroad then you’ll have to move very fast or perhaps think about doing it next year

If you are thinking of doing something abroad then you’ll have to move very fast or perhaps think about doing it next year. The most popular summer jobs abroad are Camp America (campamerica.co.uk) and traveling and working in Australia (try bunac.org). Both are fantastic ways to spend your summer. You won’t be bringing much money home but you’ll bring loads of memories instead.

If you’re more career minded then you may want to look at something related to your course. Try putting your CV up on Monster and also send a speculative letter to companies you would like to for (remember to send it with your CV). As long as you attack lots of different companies you’ll find something for you.

Remember to budget for everything over summer otherwise you could end up getting into more debt than before summer even started. People will naturally spend much more in the summer months on going out, holidays, petrol and even food (lots of BBQ’s). Keep your mindset right and you’ll arrive in Autumn with a wonderful summer behind you and money in the bank.
