Remember to treat yourself

As everyone knows, life on a student budget is tough but one of the keys to having the right mindset is to know when and where to treat yourself. Once you have opened your savings account and found a decent part time job, is then time to get organised.

The mindset of a person who can save a lot of money in the bank whilst at university is their value of the pound and how often they should treat themselves. These people make a budget and stick to it, if they can beat their budget over a couple of weeks then they’ll go and treat themselves to a new top.

The mindset of a student who will leave university with a £2,500 overdraft and no money in the bank is one who has no concept of budgeting or the value of a pound and is probably close to being an alcoholic. Going out drinking three times a week is not a treat.

Whilst you’re a student you also need to value what a ‘treat’ is, you can treat yourself in ways by spending little or no money. Try calling an old friend or getting on a train to go to the beach (for a third off visit raildcard.co.uk) or just spending an afternoon with friends instead of doing an essay can all constitute treating yourself.

Change your mindset and start finding new ways to treat yourself at university and when you are buying yourself something nice, see if you can find it cheaper on ebay – you probably can!
