Money: Work hard, play hard

Working hard at university in all areas certainly pays dividends when you leave.

Let’s face it, life is pretty tough on students and graduates but the old adage is true – if you work hard then you can play hard. Working hard at university in all areas certainly pays dividends when you leave.

The thing that really gets graduate employers to stand up and take notice is some decent work experience. It shows to that employer that you have incredible time management skills, not to mention the types of skills you learn in a part-time job.

You’ll pick up things like customer service skills, sales skills, communication skills and team management skills. All these are oh so valuable when you finish up your degree.

The trouble with many students is that they don’t know how to source this job at university. A well paid job seems elusive to many but it really needn’t be that way.

It all starts with a well thought out CV. You need to take your CV and covering letter and start approaching businesses you’d like to work for. Why not try our guide to finding a part time job? Explain in your letter that you are a student in the local area and you can work 15 hours a week and full time over summer and you want to show off your skills and help improve the companies bottom line.

If you can show how enthusiastic and passionate you are then you are half way to getting the job. Keep focused on small goals and good luck to you.

This is really helpful. I am starting in september and fully intend to find a part-time job as soon as i'm moved in. I'm used to working having been in full-time employment for 5 years. I'm now much clearer on how to go about finding something. Great stuff!

I worked for about 5 years myself. im 23 and i moved from Romania to Cyprus and in 3 years time i learned greek (cypriot) and got jobs from small ones to manager assistant in a very good company. I cant wait to come over and challenge myself (again). This time is gonna be harder because I also study full time. But Yougo sure is a really good thing, guiding people through, as a lot of info is provided.

A very informative and helpful page, many thanks to the author.

Thanks for advice, have managed to find part time job that also allows banking so can work around my uni hours.

I really want to work and study. But I'm afraid that I might not have time for my reports, projects and assignments if I work in the evenings. I read that its possible. I heard many guys say its easy, but I really can't imagine how I can get up at 8 for university then leave at around 3, rest for an hour or two and work till 10 pm every day. I wish someone can clear that point out :)

Hopefully if Tesco sort it out I should have a part-time job there while at Uni. Hopefully it should work out. I'll either have to miss out on one or two parties to make sure work is finished or cut out some work. It's all time management in the end.

P/T work is helpful but the most important thing is to make sure that you are not falling behind in your studies
