The 'psycho-' part of 'psychometric' may have some unfortunate connotations but don’t worry: it has nothing to do with homicidal maniacs. It just means that it’s connected to psychology or how your brain works. The '-metric' bit means that the test gives a measurement. So a psychometric test measures some aspect of your brain.

Why do employers use psychometric tests?

Employers use psychometric tests because they want to find the best person for the job. It's pretty obvious. Aptitude and ability tests show whether a candidate has the necessary skills, and the potential to learn new skills, to perform the job. Personality tests find out whether a candidate’s character suits the position.

How do you prepare for tests?

Facing a psychometric test? Don’t panic! To get the most out of your assessment, you just need to be prepared. Find out what tests you’ll be doing, and do some practice questions.

Test your... aptitude

Aptitude tests reveal particular skills and abilities, uncover potential and highlight areas of growth. They are often combined with ability tests, which reveal skills you have learned.

Test your... personality

Personality tests are used to measure an individual’s motivation, behaviour, values and interests. The results are then matched against the characteristics considered ideal for the job.
